1 killed, 1 injured in crash near JBLM Main Gate
JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. - A 23-year-old man was killed and another man was injured in a crash on I-5 near Joint Base Lewis-McChord's Main Gate early Saturday morning.
According to Washington State Patrol, the driver who caused the crash died, and a 22-year-old passenger was taken to Madigan Hospital but later transferred to Harborview.
WSP also said a vehicle fire broke out after the crash.
According to WSP, the driver was entering northbound I-5 and lost control, causing the vehicle to strike the barrier on the right shoulder, cross all lanes, and then strike the left shoulder barrier.
The cause of the crash was determined to be reckless driving. A second vehicle later hit the crashed car due to a loss of visibility.
The driver was identified as a 23-year-old man from Denton, Texas, and the passenger was a 22-year-old man from Rancho Cucamunga, California.
The crash completely closed northbound I-5 for several hours, causing major backups for drivers. All lanes have since reopened.
This crash remains under investigation.
