Driver flees from troopers, kills passenger in Seattle crash
SEATTLE - A woman is dead, and another is in custody after fleeing from a traffic stop near King County International Airport, leading to a fatal crash Thursday morning.
At around 7:37 a.m., the Seattle Police Department (SPD) announced it was investigating a deadly crash on Airport Way South along with troopers from the Washington State Patrol (WSP). The roadway between South Hardy Street and South Norfolk Street was closed for the preliminary investigation.
According to the SPD, the driver in the crash fled from a traffic stop initiated by WSP. The trooper attempted to stop her on Boeing Access Road, but she sped away northbound on Airport Way South.
After hearing radio traffic about a driver fleeing the first stop, a second trooper exited southbound I-5 at Albro Place to assist in the pursuit. After spotting the suspect, the second trooper initiated another traffic stop.
The driver of the fleeing vehicle then hit the second trooper’s cruiser while trying to get away, according to WSP. The trooper then terminated the pursuit.
Soon after, the woman crashed along the side of Airport Way South.
A dog that survived a deadly crash sits near the smashed rear window of the rolled-over vehicle.
Investigators believe the driver of the vehicle, a woman in her 30s, was under the influence of drugs. Her passenger, a woman in her 50s, died at the scene.
The suspect was taken to a nearby hospital and is expected to be booked into the King County Jail for second-degree murder after her release. The SPD says she will be facing a murder charge because she was committing a felony at the time her passenger died.
The investigation remains ongoing, with details subject to change.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the SPD Tip Line at 206-233-5000.
