Suspect arrested in I-5 shooting spree, at least 5 injured

A suspect is in custody for a shooting spree on Interstate 5 that left at least five people injured with gunshot wounds Monday night.

The shootings spanned across King and Pierce County, and investigators say the suspect left behind seven separate crime scenes. The motive behind the shootings remains unknown.

The Washington State Patrol held a press conference at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, calling it an unwarranted, unprovoked attack.

"These people didn't do anything to deserve this," said WSP Captain Ron Mead in the press conference.

The first shooting, according to WSP, took place on northbound I-5 near S 320th Street in Federal Way. At around 8:26 p.m., a female passenger was shot in the neck. She took an exit, contacted a fire station, and taken to the hospital in critical condition.

The second and third shootings happened in the Seattle area, one near the northbound I-5/I-90 interchange, and the other near MLK Jr. Way. One person was injured by broken glass near MLK, and a man suffered a graze wound to his leg just south of I-90.

The fourth shooting, which happened at 10:57 p.m., resulted in two other men being shot in the leg near State Route 18 in Federal Way. They suffered non-life-threatening wounds and have since been released from the hospital.

The fifth and sixth shootings happened in Pierce County, where a man was shot in the neck and hospitalized.

The seventh shooting was reported after a woman realized her car had a bullet hole in it after she arrived in Portland.

The suspect's vehicle in the initial shooting was described as a white Volvo with California license plates. Troopers were able to connect the Volvo to several of the other shootings on I-5.

According to WSP, Pierce County Sheriff's deputies and the Fircrest Police Department made an arrest after finding the suspect's vehicle in Fircrest.

The investigation remains ongoing and troopers are looking for any additional victims.
